Yesterday I dropped in on the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio of San Francisco to visit and catch up with my former colleagues at Lucasfilm and ILM.
I stopped to take a check-in photo of the Yoda Fountain, as one does when visiting ILM, and didn’t notice the rather eerie image I captured until much later on…
Is it just me, or is the water falling from the Yoda Fountain clearly forming the shape of a crystal skull in the photo? (Queue scary music…)
Whether you’re a believer in the supernatural, or not, it’s a pretty damn cool image… A once in a lifetime sort of shot.
The funny thing is, there have always been rumors of ghostly sightings and other poltergeist-like phenomena at LDAC.
Part of the deal with the facility, which was built, and is owned by George Lucas’ Skywalker Properties, is that they took a very “green” approach to the design of the building and the use of materials for the new buildings, which stands on the site of the old Letterman Army Hospital. A facility that stood on that spot through two World Wars, Korea, and Viet Nam, attending to the wounded and dying from all of those conflicts.
When the complex was demolished to make room for the new Lucasfilm facility, a decision was made to reconstitute the concrete and wood from the old Letterman Army Hospital to rebuild it. Now, depending on your spiritual and/or occult views, that means they built it with materials infused with the energies of the dying and suffering service people who were cared for there… That’s very bad Feng Shui Ju-Ju. Very, very bad… As Micheline Chau, the former President of Lucasfilm would likely tell you…
Chau had allegedly experienced repeated hauntings in her office, and there were stories of other weird stuff going on all over the place, including a bathroom on the 7th floor (the executive floor where George Lucas and Steven Spielberg used to have offices) that was allegedly always freezing cold, no matter how they tried to regulate it with the A/C system … And those are only a few of the stories I’ve heard from other denizens of LucasWorld.
Things got to Chau, so much, that they tried Ghost-Busting remedies in the bathroom, such as Red Riced Yeast (supposed to be to ghosts what garlic is alleged to be for vampires) on the floor to drive out whatever revenants were chilling out in the place.
After a while, it got so bad that Chau brought in a couple of Taoist Priests to do an exorcism on the place (The employees were told it was a “blessing” of the building, but there was a very diverse, International population working there, and word got out this was some serious Asian Ghost-Busting tech… They had installed wind chimes and Yin/Yang mirrors all over the buildings (which mysteriously disappeared then she “retired” suddenly and Kathy Kennedy took over.)
Sounds like a great idea, if you believe in that sort of thing, but if you think about it, going after Western ghosts with Asian spiritual technologies is kind of like trying to ward off a Jewish Vampire with a Crucifix… <sigh> Such is life amongst the #Muggles. 😉
